Potters Tour - Oct 16 - 17, 2010 10:00 - 5:00

Studios

Brush Valley Pottery:

Josh Floyd's 5th year on the tour will be his second at Brush Valley Pottery, the revived studio of the late David Hovlund. Visitors to Brush Valley will recognize Josh and his functional pots from the gallery at Smicksburg Pottery. Come check out his latest experiments in wood fired earthenware and salt glazed stoneware.

FMS Studio:

Michael Smithammer of FMS Studio relocated to Indiana six years ago. Although he works in many media, he particularly likes clay. He specializes in hand-built pieces. Working spontaneously, he shapes an object and then uses the form for carving or drawing. He uses an electric kiln in his home but will get different effects by using other types of kilns.

East Creek Studio:

This is Ruth Ferrier's second year her East Creek Studio has been on the tour.. She has expanded her artistic touch and talent from gardening and painting to utilizing clay as an artistic and functional medium. Her work and that of other new emerging potters will be displayed. In her modest studio you will find fresh, new, pottery with distinct character. She also has used some new forms to accent the wonder of her nearby gardens. Ruth continues to show work from student potters during the tour.

Hedman Pottery:

Donn Hedman is just south of Smicksburg. The view from the studio provides a pastoral backdrop to the work of creating his pottery. Donn's work is the result of many years as a potter, a teacher, living in Africa, and his mastery of the trade.

Guest Potter: Greg Daniels and Randy Meyers

Little Mahoning Creek Pottery:

Trained in the culinary arts, Nancy Smeltzer feels that many of her pieces are meant to be utilized in the everyday rituals of eating and drinking. Birds, plants and animals that live around the Smicksburg community are often reflected on her pottery. Nancy finds that glazing from wood ash and salt enhance the “wonderful, imprintable quality of clay.”

Guest Potter: Kyle Houser

Smicksburg Pottery:

Betty Hedman ,owner and operator of the well known pottery shop in Smicksburg. She fires in the kilns behind her studio. She uses flame, kiln atmosphere, and salt as the elements that intimately intermingle with her pots to give them the warm rich colors and surface she desires.

Guest Potters: Yvette Lepley

Stoke Hole Pottery:

Birch and Debra Frew may be known best for their wood firing and also kiln building. Brich's "once fire" technique is a challenge and the various methods of decorations he makes are notable because they are done on "greenware". Debra is a potter in her own right. Their work will be on display in their gallery next to the studio.

Guest Potters: Cathy Bizousk and Gary Stam

Windblown Studio:

Rita Nichols uses her experience in pottery and art to create functional pottery. She also shares her knowledge, facilities and experience by teaching pottery classes. Windblown Studio, designed and built in 2006, provides a peaceful, stimulating and open environment.

Guest Potters: Scott Cooper

Wild Apple Pond Studio:

Wild Apple Pond Studio has been on the tour since 2009. Just 2 1/2 miles off Rt 119, this serene and peaceful studio is the place where Janet Runyan creates her functional and sculptural clay work.
